2019 Ruffnecks Return Speed & Talent

2019 14U Patriot's Day Champs

The 14U Ruffnecks squad figures to be an exciting team to watch in 2019.  Once again there are several 9th graders on the roster who have a good chance to compete for spots on their high school teams.  This provides an opportunity to expand our roster and to give experience to the 8th graders in March, April, and May.  Once the squad reaches the mid-point of the season at Memorial Day, the team turn to tournament competition.  The program continues to challenge our 14U players after Memorial Day with a series of events against older competition.  With speed and hitting talent, this team will hold their own.   The roster is also deep in pitching and versatility.  Three new players join the program in 2019.  The 14U Ruffnecks will also play several games during the spring against high school JV teams.  Among the program’s primary objectives, the 14U roster will be challenged.  Ted Novio returns to “team coach” with Brian Chaput and Rob Calagione.  We also welcome the contributions of Bryan Muenzner.

The 14U Ruffnecks program maintains its instructional, developmental, approach that benefits players during the 13U and 14U seasons.  We accelerate the developmental process by providing an intensive, tournament-oriented schedule during the summer. There is considerable self-awareness that takes place during the 14U season.  It manifests itself in a separation of talent in hitting, pitching, and defensive versatility.  Sometimes the transition is significant.  The 14U program prepares players to compete at the high school level.  It also begins the transition in competition that becomes so significant at the 15U level in the Ruffnecks program.  Practices are conducted with uniformity, purpose, and structure once per week throughout the season.  Team hitting sessions are weekly during the winter months.  All Ruffnecks also benefit from the Winter Workout program at Harvard University on selective weekends from January to March.  The season consists of approximately 60-70 games between March and the end of July.

New Candidates and Selection to the 14U Ruffnecks

The 14U Ruffnecks are comprised of a core of returning players and new talent that demonstrate athleticism and passion for the game of baseball.  We continue to prioritize “Baseball IQ.”   We look for new 14 year old Ruffnecks each year who put pressure on returners and who add to the mix of talent.  We are very deliberate with our selection at 14U. The roster expands to approximately 15-17 players, all of whom are expected to find roles and contribute. Since the program’s entry point is at the 13U year, it is common for most players to return for their 14U season.  The number of open roster spots is determined during the re-enrollment period between August 1 and August 15.  After August, and during Fall Baseball, we consider players who want to join the program.

New Candidates are encouraged to participate in Fall Baseball or to join the program during Winter Workouts.  Inquiries may call the office directly at (508) 409-4106 or email neruffnecks@gmail.com any time during the year.  We will be glad to answer questions.  We do not hold traditional “tryouts” for new 14 year olds, yet we encourage highly motivated and talented players to inquire and to consider the Ruffnecks.

Developmental and Competitive Objectives

  • The 14U Ruffnecks is a high intensity, 4 month program for baseball players who are high school varsity-bound athletes: April through end of July.
  • Our coaches manage a roster of approximately 15-17 players. Each player must work to define his role. Our schedule demands a good sized roster.
  • We use our own indoor facility during the winter along with weekend workouts at Harvard University.
  • In April and May we participate in NEBA play.  The Northeast Baseball Alliance is comprised of highly competitive travel baseball programs.
  • Coaches expect players to run, hit, and throw regularly, both in the context of the program and on their own.
  • Beginning Memorial Weekend we become a tournament/travel program, focusing primarily on tournament play with extensive travel.
  • In June and July we expect all players to be fully committed to the Ruffnecks. It is inappropriate to play for multiple teams in the context of this program.
