Winter Workouts Begin – Spring Around the Corner

Early alarm clocks and wake up calls greeted 75 Ruffnecks players on Sunday, February 3rd in the “Bubble” at Boston College.  Dedicated players and coaches awoke as early as 3:00am to get to the first Ruffnecks Winter Workout on Super Bowl Sunday… some from Connecticut, Western Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. The common bond… begin preparation with other like-minded, focused, ball players who can’t wait for Spring to arrive.  The program is fortunate to have access to the Boston College “Bubble” for the high reps and skill work covered during Ruffnecks Winter Workouts.  These sessions are less about organizing our teams, and more about nurturing a culture where players of all ages work side by side to get better.  Younger players mix in with older players in skill based stations designed to shake the cobwebs off and get into a rhythm prior to the spring high school practices and the start of baseball season.

Ruffnecks coaches and associates (17 of them) devote their Sunday mornings to instruct, hit fungos, supervise flat ground work and bullpens, man hitting stations and engage with Ruffnecks players.  For many it is time to reunite, get with teammates, and reaffirm the commitment to development and camaraderie that underlie the values of the program.  Older players are mentors to younger players, helping them get through the routines and understand the expectations.  Yet, the pace never slackens.  Baseballs are moving everywhere around the spacious indoor turf of Boston College’s Alumni Stadium. Most importantly, we get our work done.  It is a joy to see so many terrific kids making the effort to get better.
