14’s Capture 1st Tourney of Season

14s Focus in the Huddle

The 14U Ruffnecks played six games over a three day Patriot’s Day Weekend and captured their first championship title of the 2019 season.  The ‘Necks went 5-1 in the event, rattling off 5 consecutive wins after dropping a 5-0 decision in the opening game.  Contributions were plentiful from the entire roster.  Despite playing shorthanded with several 9th graders playing for their high school programs, the Ruffnecks played spirited baseball.  Coach Jon Beverly had the team bunting, stealing bases, playing good defense, and getting the most from a pitching staff that is significantly short-handed.  Regular starters Hagan Ward and Teo Spadaccini are still on the rebound from arm injuries, so their absence was compensated with efficient outings and solid defense.  John Milewski, John Hegarty, and Oisin Lee managed to absorb significant innings in pool play.  They were complemented with contributions from Matt Morin, Hunter Stevens, and Trevor Grady.

After going 3-1 in Pool Play, the ‘Necks entered Monday’s playoff round expecting to use position players to fill innings on the mound and get through the day.  James Henshon stepped up in the semi-final game with an effective outing supported by a break out offense. The 10-0 victory that propelled the Ruffnecks to the championship game was fortuitously shortened.  Henshon was brilliant as he pounded strikes and challenged hitters.  Hunter Stevens took the ball in the championship, expecting a limited outing after throwing an abbreviated outing on Saturday.  Stevens was spectacular in a complete game gem.  He pitched to contact, relied on a terrific defense, and rode a first inning 4-0 lead to a complete game 4-0 victory over a worthy, tough, and talented opponent.  Base running and timely hits kept the Ruffnecks going all day.  Ryan Chandor and Max Gomez each stole multiple bases.  But the day belonged to Stevens who carried his appreciative teammates with a tremendous effort.  Congratulations go the 14U Ruffnecks.
