Ruffnecks Teams Hit the Road

All Ruffnecks teams are under way and hitting the road for the summer.  Of course, there is also plenty of activity at the local level as well.  The 15U Ruffnecks and 16U Ruffnecks participate in the 17U Perfect Game Super25 June 23-26, while the Senior Ruffnecks head to Nashville for the Music City Classic.  The 14U Ruffnecks take off for Georgia and the 14U Perfect Game WWBA June 23-30.  The 13U Ruffnecks stay close to home until July 8th when they and the 14s travel to Nashville for the 14U CABA World Series.

15U Ruffnecks Advance to Semis

The 15U Ruffnecks advanced to the semifinals in the 16U Division of the Summer Solstice June 17-19.  Outstanding pitching and defense carried the sqaud through pool play and the first playoff round.  After a disappointing 1-1 tie in the first game, the squad posted back to back shutouts with 3-0 and 5-0 wins.  Strong outings from Teddy Goss, Ben Reyes, Jackson Emus, and Josh Gruenberg sparked the starting rotation.  Seamus Barrett pitched well in the semifinals against a talented lineup that eventually took its toll on the younger ‘Necks.  The team heads into the next two weeks facing the challenge of significantly older competition, including a trip to Nashville for the 16U Music City Classic.

16s and Seniors at Super17 in New Jersey

Both of the oldest Ruffnecks squads attended the Super17 at Diamond Nation in Flemington, New Jersey.  In one of the most highly recruited Mid-Atlantic events, both Ruffnecks rosters gave a good account of themselves.  The 16s split two excellent games on Saturday.  On Sunday, they were less fortunate in a game that simply snowballed away at the hands of a very strong hitting opponent.  Meanwhile the Senior Ruffnecks distinguished themselves as one of the top teams at the event, with many college eyes at their games.  The Senior Ruffnecks won their pool but declined to stay for the playoff round due to academic obligations and commitments among many on the roster.  The Senior Ruffnecks were paced by excellent pitching and defense.  Dylan Presnal, Henry Ennen, and Mike Suglia pitched through a 3-2 win in a Game 1.  Owen Batchelder set a dominant tone in Game 2.  He combined with Cam Garfield, Bryan Gotti, and Robby Cerulle to secure a 2-0 shutout win in Game 2. In Game 3, Will Simeone, Mike Stewart, and Dario Tarquinio did the job in a 6-4 victory.

The Seniors head to Music City for the start of a 16 day road trip that will take them to several of the top events in the country in Tennessee and Georgia.

Joe Walsh Named Gatorade Player of Year

Joe Walsh

Joe Walsh, a four year Ruffneck, has been named the Massachusetts high school Gatorade Player of the Year by USA Today.  The announcement was made Thursday, May 28th.  Joe is the second Walsh brother to play for the Ruffnecks.  His older brother, Matt, was a catcher who excelled at Franklin Pierce University and in the Cape Cod League.  Matt has a good chance to be drafted this year.  Younger brother Joe came to the Ruffnecks as a 14U player, bringing enthusiasm and athleticism to the game.  As a left hander, Joe pitched, played the outfield, and played 1B under the guidance of Coach Novio.  His 14U season saw him contribute in all those areas, and he added to the character and chemistry of a tightly knit team.  His 15U year was transformational.  He developed a fierce 2-strike approach at the plate under Coach Kevin Graber, and with his strength, discovered the ability to hit balls hard… even with two strikes.  His 16U season was equally transformational under Coach Kirk Fredericks.  Joe emerged as a pitcher with an outstanding fast ball and competitive drive.  Ruffnecks pitching coach Matt Blake worked with Walsh over the past two winters and praises him for his commitment and dedication to get the most out of his abilities.

Joe Walsh’s ability and hard work earned him considerable attention during the summer season with the Ruffnecks as a 16U player.  Team success, talent, and a challenging schedule put Joe and his teammates in a position to be seen by many college recruiters.  Joe has committed to Boston College, where he will play for the Eagles.  Walsh is among several talented pitchers who provide a solid starting core for the Ruffnecks this summer of 2015.  He is joined by LHP Holden White  and RHP Morgan McSweeney, both of whom are headed to Wake Forest.  All of us in the Ruffnecks family join in congratulating Joe Walsh on this achievement.
