Two Ruffnecks Named to Area Code Team

Evan Sleight & Billy Seidl

As the summer baseball season of 2017 comes to a close, we wish to recognize the fine efforts of the 89 Ruffnecks who participated this year.  Among those 89, we also wish to take time to recognize two Ruffnecks in the class of 2019 who were named to the the Underclass Area Code team representing the Northeast.  New York Yankees scout, Matt Hyde, and his staff, tapped Billy Seidl (St. Sebastian’s School ‘19) and Evan Sleight (Belmont Hill School ‘19) for the Area Code roster.  Both Seidl and Sleight have been Ruffnecks since they were 13 years old.  The 13u season is the entry point to the Ruffnecks program and experience.  Both players are outstanding scholar-athletes.  Sleight is committed to the University of Virginia for baseball, and Seidl recently committed to Duke University for baseball.  Sleight is a versatile outfielder, left handed hitter, with outstanding speed.  Seidl is a hard throwing right handed pitcher who also plays some 1B for Ruffnecks and his school.  He will be at pitcher at the next level.  One thing that was made very clear by the recruiting coordinators at both Virginia and Duke, was the emphasis on both players’ academic profile.  Coach Hyde doubled down on the importance of the academic performance of both players.  “There are hard throwing pitchers and talented outfielders all over the place who can’t get into places like Duke or Virginia or Boston College.  These kids know how to take care of business.  And those schools do not ignore the academic piece.”  Indeed, both players have understood the importance of academic performance all along.  They are also intensely committed athletes who manage their time, maintain focus, and possess the talent to be recognized.  And in the context of the Ruffnecks program, both players distinguish themselves as terrific teammates.   Both Seidl and Sleight have been recognized as Pesky Teammate Award recipients.  Each year, the organization provides ONE award at the annual Banquet in November.  It is the Johnny Pesky Teammate Award, given to the player on each team who is recognized for those qualities that define being a good teammate in the context of the program.  Seidl and Sleight great examples.  Congratulations to both players.

Ruffnecks Alums in Park League All Star Game!

Park League All Stars

The Park League of Boston is one of the oldest, longest enduring, amateur baseball leagues in the United States.  Many current college players, former college players, and even some former professional players have played in the historic league.  The summer of 2017 saw three recent Ruffnecks alums make the Park League All Star Game.  Pictured below are (from left to right) Brad Marchetti (Tufts University ‘20); Zack Horwitz (Amherst College ‘20); Tommy Seidl (Harvard ‘21).  Nice enduring friendships do not end with the end of Ruffnecks playing days.  All three players participated in the Ruffnecks program from their 13U season for all five years.

Ruffnecks Capture Boston Open

Open MVPs Hauswirth & Bowman

The 17U “Senior” Ruffnecks captured the 2017 Boston Open with an exciting 4-3 victory in extra innings against a tough Florida Legends squad.  The Ruffnecks, missing three pitchers on the staff, cobbled together gutty starts and splendid relief over the course of five days and eight games.  The squad played (and won) three one-run games on the final day, Monday, July 17th.  The effort was team-based, all the way.  Will Fletcher started the final day with a 2-1 complete game pitching gem.  The semi-finals featured a determined start from Colman Shea and relief from Dario Tarquinio.  In the championship game, Jamie Hauswirth was spectacular, mixing speeds and pitches in a complete game, 8 inning, 4-3 victory.  The championship run was sparked by a grand slam off the bat of Connor Bowman, who erased a 4-1 deficit with his blast in the semi finals.  Landon Dombrowski caught the semifinal and managed an outstanding game.  In the championship, Dylan Melody delivered a clutch extra inning double that sealed the win for the ‘Necks.  He was driven home by Rory Bordiuk with a sharp single.  The infield defense played very well over the course of the tournament, with Spenser Smith, Brodie Carey, Christian Allaire, Christian Walsh, and Bordiuk all contributing.  Strong pitching outings from left hander Jack Pawloski paced the Ruffnecks, as his profile continues to rise.  Hard throwing Liam Rohan and righthander Jeff Price also contributed to the strong efforts from the mound.  Jamie Hauswirth and Connor Bowman were named co-MVPs of the Boston Open for their performances.

Jake Miller Swings for Seniors

The season has been defined by a long, sixteen day road trip through Nashville, Tennessee and Georgia, where the Ruffnecks competed against many of the top teams in the nation.  “Returning home to New England is refreshing,” remarks Coach Toffey.  “It gives the players a chance to be home, and to play in front of college coaches from our region.”  The Ruffnecks did not disappoint during either the Boston Invitational or  the Boston Open.  In both events the team put a fine effort together on the field.  It was a fine effort from a solid, well coached team. Congratulations to Coaches Toffey, Brickley, and Casey on their tremendous dedication and efforts.
