Ruffnecks Featured on Perfect Game Site

The 17U “Senior” Ruffnecks are in the middle of a 16 day road trip that has carried them through Nashville, and on to the Perfect Game Elite Round Robin at LakePoint in Emerson, GA.  The trip has been challenging in terms of facing strong pitching and competition, as well as finding a rhythm the Ruffnecks can call their own.  The early going was rough, but competitive.  The Ruffnecks dropped three one run games in Nashville.  The team struggled, and may well again.  But when they got to Georgia, Coaches Toffey, Brickley, and Casey felt it important to practice… which the team has done EVERY day in addition to playing in the PG Elite RR.  “Just a good group of kids trying to get better,” says Coach Toffey.

On Wednesday, June 28th, the Perfect Game feature writers covered the Ruffnecks game vs. FTB Rockets out of Jupiter, FL.  It is the second time these two clubs faced each other in the past three years.  With no false humility, it is pretty obvious that the coverage was intended for the FTB Rockets and their roster that boasts ten Division I commits, including two to Florida, one to Miami, and one to Vanderbilt.  What the PG folks also discovered was a group of scrappy Ruffnecks from New England who captured their attention with solid, fundamental baseball, and a heart.  The team and coaches had no idea that the game was being covered, other than there were a number of professional scouts to check out the 90+ arms of FTB and a couple of position players.  “We keep telling the kids to play the game and ignore who is behind the backstop,” adds Coach Brickley, himself a long-time professional scout for the Reds and Toronto.  “Tonight, they did just that.  They played the game without distractions.”

Following an impressive 7-5 win, during which the Ruffnecks put up 3 in the 1st, 3 in the 2nd, and 1 in the 3rd, the reporters approached the Ruffnecks staff in the dugout.  The result is a feature article on the home page of the Perfect Game website (link provided below).

As a program that hails from New England, we hope this helps all of our fellow, hard working New England opponents, and programs to demonstrate that there are good players and well coached teams in the New England area.  And to all our worthy opponents in our home region, we thank you and hope you share in the spotlight.  You never know who is watching!

16U ‘Necks Capture 17U PG Super25!

After four games on Sunday, June 25th, the 16u Ruffnecks emerged as champions of the 17U Perfect Game Super25 New England Regional.  Along the way the 2019’s outscored their opponents 54-3 behind two perfect game pitching performances, one from Billy Seidl, and a championship 7-0 effort from Jeff Price.  Any time a team gets to the finals of a tournament, the opponent is a quality team.  Price’s performance is impressive from that perspective alone.  Of course, a perfect game is dependent upon good defense, and the Ruffnecks got good defense all tournament long.  The catching duo of J.P. Olson and Danny Cooke led the way with great game calling and game management.  Price and Seidl were not the only stellar pitchers during the course of the event.  Seamus Barret got his team going with a terrific outing.  Colin McGrath contributed solid innings.  Ben Reyes pitched a gem in Game 2.  Jackson Emus pitched well in Game 3, with a clean inning of relief from Price.  Will Greer took the mound in the semi final game and beat a solid CT Blue Jays team. Jake McOsker pitched a playoff 2 hitter with 13 K’s.

Offensively, many contributors had a hand in the team success.  Jack Flynn, Evan Sleight, JP Olson, and Colin Blasco had hot bats throughout the tournament.  Most importantly, the lineup that Coach Fredericks put on the field did their jobs, played as a team, and filled roles. The 16U Ruffnecks rest up for a few days before hitting the road to Nashville, TN and the Music City Classic for 2019 grads, June 29 – July 2.
